Shortage of Essential Ingredients Threatens Tunisian Pastry Industry
The president of the National Chamber of Pastry Manufacturers, Samia Dhiab, confirmed today, Wednesday, November 26, 2025, that the industry is facing significant supply chain issues, including the disappearance of certain products and a surge in prices.
Key Challenges
During her radio intervention, she highlighted the shortage of butter and flour, which poses a major obstacle to production. She explained that the sector is facing numerous other challenges, leaving manufacturers uncertain about their ability to prepare for the upcoming New Year's season.
Potential Consequences
Ms. Dhiab warned that if the current situation persists, it could lead to the shutdown of some businesses during the festive period, paving the way for the parallel sector, which already accounts for around 60% of the market, to produce pastries.
Price Increases and Labor Shortages
She also confirmed that prices will be high due to a 10% increase in costs, combined with a decline in citizens' purchasing power. Additionally, she reported a shortage of specialized labor, reaching up to 50%, noting that current training centers in Tunisia are unable to guarantee the sector's self-sufficiency.
Call for Support
The Chamber president appealed to the authorities to support the struggling sector, aiming to ensure its sustainability and guarantee the availability of basic products for consumers.
