Historic Verdict in Brazil
A historic verdict has been handed down in Brazil. The majority of judges in the Brazilian Supreme Court found former President Jair Bolsonaro guilty of plotting a coup to stay in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections. He has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for this attempted coup.
This decision makes Bolsonaro the first former president in Brazilian history to be convicted for an attack on democracy.
Reaction from Donald Trump
In the United States, Donald Trump described this conviction as "extremely surprising". These comments come just a few weeks after Washington exerted pressure on Brasília to spare his far-right ally this fate.
"It's really surprising that this is happening. It looks a lot like what they tried to do to me," said the Republican president, referring to his own legal troubles. "I knew him as the President of Brazil... He was a good man."
