Tunisian Court Upholds Three-Year Prison Sentence for Journalists Borhen Bsaïs and Mourad Zeghidi

On Tuesday, the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Tunis delivered its verdict in the case involving media figures Borhen Bsaïs and Mourad Zeghidi. The court chose to uphold the first-instance judgment, sentencing the two journalists to a three-year and six-month prison term.

According to a judicial source relayed by the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency, the two men were found guilty of money laundering and tax offenses.

This decision validates the initial sentence handed down on January 22 by the First Instance Tribunal in Tunis. In addition to the loss of liberty, the financial aspect of the case proves particularly burdensome for the two defendants. The court ordered the payment of significant financial fines, as well as the confiscation of all their personal assets. Furthermore, their shares in the companies in which they are shareholders have been officially seized in favor of the Tunisian public treasury.

For reference, the arrest of Borhen Bsaïs and Mourad Zeghidi dates back to May 11, 2024, when they were detained before the opening of this judicial saga, which has now reached its conclusion on appeal.
