Tunisian MP Calls for Urgent Intervention to Resolve Border Crisis

Ben Guerdane MP Ali Zghoudoud has urged the Tunisian presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene quickly to find solutions to ensure the smooth passage of people and goods at the Ras Jedir border crossing, warning of a worsening social crisis in the region.

In a statement to Diwan FM, the parliamentarian said that the border crossing has been experiencing an unprecedented situation since March 2024, marked by a blockade of cross-border trade from Libya to Tunisia, while Tunisian goods trucks continue to cross the border into Libya under normal conditions.

According to Zghoudoud, travelers and traders are facing long queues that can last up to four days. He also mentioned cases of detention and confiscation of certain goods and equipment, a situation that has led to a slowdown in economic activity and a rise in unemployment in the Ben Guerdane delegation.

Zghoudoud emphasized the need to reactivate the Tunisian-Libyan mixed commission to resolve these difficulties and restore normal commercial exchanges between the two countries.

He highlighted that cross-border trade represents a vital economic lever for nearly 120,000 residents of the Ben Guerdane region, as well as for many citizens of the interior governorates, who are heavily dependent on the activity of the Ras Jedir border crossing.
