Archaeological Exploration Mission Off the Coast of Bizerte
A team from the Department of Underwater Archaeological Studies of the General Inventory and Studies Division of the National Heritage Institute (INP) conducted an exploration mission along the route of the Medusa underwater cable, off the coast of the governorate of Bizerte. The objective was to verify that the project area and the regions crossed by the cable do not contain any sites related to underwater cultural heritage.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs published on Tuesday, this mission is part of the INP's monitoring of projects carried out in the national maritime domain. The team conducted scientific dives and underwater investigations, as well as monitoring of excavation and backfilling work related to the laying of the cable over a distance of 1,200 meters from the beach of Ain Meriem, in cooperation with divers from the Tunisian Navy.
The mission was led by a team of specialists, including the director of the underwater archaeology department and head of archaeological research Ahmed Ghadhoum, as well as heritage curators Khaled Dhifi and Wajih Fadhlaoui, with the support of the INP's coordination services and logistical support.
This intervention is part of the implementation of the conclusions and recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Maritime Activities, attached to the General Secretariat for Maritime Affairs at the Presidency of the Government, in which the INP represents the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
