International Workshop in Bizerte: "Bizerte's Urban Future Lab: A Smart and Resilient City in the Historic Center"
The city of Bizerte hosted an international workshop under the theme "Bizerte's Urban Future Lab: A Smart and Resilient City in the Historic Center". Held in the heart of the medina, the event brought together architects, urban planners, researchers, and students from Tunisia, Italy, France, Portugal, Egypt, and Morocco. The objective was to imagine the future of coastal heritage cities, reconciling heritage, innovation, and sustainability.
International Academic Cooperation
Seven universities participated in this event, including:
- Ibn Khaldoun University
- ENSAPLV (France)
- University of Catania (Italy)
- Lusófona University (Portugal)
- British University in Egypt
- Private University of Fes (Morocco)
- ESSTED (Tunisia)
Supervised by teachers and researchers, students worked in international and interdisciplinary teams. This immersion fostered a unique cultural exchange and enriching scientific discussions.
Bizerte, a Laboratory for Urban Innovation
During the event, numerous workshops were organized, focusing on three major challenges:
- Climate resilience: adapting cities to the effects of climate change
- Social inclusivity: integrating the diversity of inhabitants into urban projects
- Heritage preservation: protecting the historical identity while integrating the digital tools of smart cities
The proposals from this workshop will contribute to making Bizerte a model of a sustainable and intelligent Mediterranean city.
Towards New Projects
Beyond the student work, the event allowed for the strengthening of international cooperation with Ibn Khaldoun University through new academic partnerships. A scientific publication will valorize the proposals and extend the impact of the workshop.
