President‑CEO of the Tunisian Wholesale Markets Company Confirms Sufficient Stock for Ramadan
Sofiane Toumiz, President‑Director General of the Tunisian Wholesale Markets Company (STMMG), has confirmed that all the products needed for the month of Ramadan are available in sufficient quantities at the Bir El Kassaa wholesale market.
He added, however, that some items – such as peas – have been affected by the recent rains that fell across the country.
Speaking on the airwaves of Radio Nationale on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, Sofiane Toumiz highlighted that Tunisia operates eight markets of national interest, with Bir El Kassaa remaining the most important. This market supplies the majority of the governorates throughout the Republic.
“Bir El Kassaa is a model market that has succeeded in establishing a balance between supply and demand, as well as between procurement and pricing,” he said, emphasising the need to replicate this system in other markets across the country.
Rehabilitation of the Bir El Kassaa Wholesale Market
The Radio Nationale guest announced that renovation works are currently underway at the Bir El Kassaa market. The technical specifications for the infrastructure upgrade will be published soon.
In addition:
- A specific budget has been allocated for the maintenance of cold‑storage rooms.
- The current count of cold‑storage units – forty‑two – will be increased.
Sofiane Toumiz also stressed that fees within this market are strictly regulated by law, leaving no room for manipulation.
He concluded by reminding listeners that digitalisation, which began in 2016, has greatly contributed to ensuring full transparency in commercial transactions.
