English Could Become a Fundamental Language from the Second Year of Basic Education in Tunisia

The Education, Vocational Training, Scientific Research, Youth, and Sports Commission at the Assembly of the People's Representatives has announced the examination of an organic law proposal aimed at strengthening the use of the English language in the Tunisian Republic. Referenced under number 117 of the year 2025, this legislative initiative provides, in its first article, for the teaching of English as a fundamental language from the second year of basic education. It also stipulates the adoption of English as the language of instruction for scientific and technological subjects from the preparatory cycle. According to the second article of the proposal, higher education and scientific research institutions would be required to integrate the English language into programs related to technology, natural sciences, medical sciences, and economics. The text also proposes, in its third article, that public structures and national institutions adopt English as a second working language. This measure would particularly concern international and diplomatic relations, investment attraction, economic cooperation, as well as the fields of software and computer systems. Through this bill, its initiators intend to strengthen Tunisia's openness to its international environment and improve the competitiveness of the educational, university, and institutional system in the face of the requirements of the global economy.
