China Opposes Targeting Iran’s New Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei
Beijing announced on Monday that it will not tolerate any attempts to single out the newly appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, following earlier Israeli threats to eliminate any successor to his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
During a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Gu Jiakun answered a question with a firm statement:
“China opposes any interference in the internal affairs of other countries, under any pretext. The sovereignty, identity and territorial integrity of Iran must be respected.”
The Zionist entity had warned on Wednesday that the new Iranian Supreme Leader would be a “target” even before Mojtaba Khamenei’s designation was confirmed. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that the new Leader would not stay in power for long without his approval.
A High‑Tension Succession
The Assembly of Iranian Experts officially confirmed the appointment of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The announcement came just hours after Donald Trump threatened that any Iranian leader chosen without U.S. consent “would not last long.”
In an interview with ABC News, Trump said:
“Any new Supreme Leader must get our approval. If we don’t approve him, he won’t stay in office for long.”
Mojtaba Khamenei’s influence grew significantly during his father’s reign, spanning the security forces and the country’s extensive economic networks. His selection sends a clear message that the radical conservative current continues to hold tightly to power in Iran.
