Back to School in Tunisia: The National Nutrition Institute Takes the Lead Against Childhood Obesity
In the face of the alarming rise of childhood obesity in Tunisia, the Zouhair Kallel National Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology has launched an unprecedented campaign at the start of the school year in a shopping center in Tunis. The goal is to raise awareness among students and parents about the importance of a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
Alarming Figures: A National Alert
Recent data reveals that 21% of Tunisian children are already affected by obesity. Even more alarming, nearly 50% of the population could be exposed by 2027. This trend places Tunisia among the most threatened countries in the region, confirming the urgent need for preventive measures from a young age.
The Crucial Role of School Breakfast
During this campaign, nutritionists emphasized a simple yet vital message: a balanced breakfast remains the first line of defense against obesity. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and water should replace ultra-processed and sugary products. This key meal not only affects academic concentration but also the physical vitality of students throughout the morning.
A National Strategy to Anchor Nutritional Culture
This action, led by the Institute's Department of Training and Information, is part of a national public health strategy. The ambition is clear: to establish a culture of healthy nutrition in schools and families, in order to break the vicious cycle of childhood obesity before it becomes an irreversible societal problem.
