Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Flu Detected in Northern France
An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu has been detected in a pheasant and partridge farm located in Pihen-lès-Guînes, in the Pas-de-Calais department (northern France), local authorities reported on Saturday, as cited by French media.
Immediate Measures Taken
The diagnosis, confirmed on Friday, led the Pas-de-Calais prefecture to immediately trigger the biosafety measures provided for by regulations.
- All affected poultry will be culled to prevent the spread of the virus.
- The breeder will be compensated, the prefecture specified in a statement.
Restricted Zones Established
Two restricted zones have been established around the farm:
- Protection zone: a 4-kilometer radius around the farm.
- Surveillance zone: a 10-kilometer radius around the farm.
Enhanced Obligations for Bird Owners
Within these zones, all owners of poultry and captive birds are subject to enhanced obligations, including:
- Keeping animals sheltered.
- Prohibiting the transportation of animals.
Prevention and Control Measures in Place
The prefecture assures that all prevention and control measures are in place to limit the risk of virus transmission, which regularly affects northern France during the autumn season.
