Austrian Police Foil Poisoning Plot After Two-Week Manhunt
Suspect Arrested in Burgenland, Southern Austria
On Saturday, the Austrian police brought an end to a two-week manhunt by apprehending a 39-year-old individual suspected of contaminating baby food with rat poison. The investigation is focusing on a possible extortion attempt targeting a major industrialist in the sector.
According to the Austrian Press Agency, the suspect's identity remains undisclosed. He is facing serious charges, including deliberate endangerment of public safety and attempted grievous bodily harm.
The Case Unfolds
The case began 15 days ago when health authorities detected rat poison in baby food products sold at several major retailers. Given that the affected products were manufactured in Germany, a close collaboration was established with German police to track down the suspect.
Thanks to international cooperation, five contaminated containers were intercepted before they could be consumed not only in Austria but also in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Extortion Theory Confirmed
The investigators believe that the suspect's modus operandi suggests a clear motive: to extort money from the product manufacturer. The company has since voluntarily withdrawn its entire product range from the Austrian market as a precautionary measure. Although the alert remains partially in place in the Burgenland region, authorities suspect that a second contaminated container may have been sold at the same Spar supermarket where one of the contaminated containers was found.
Ongoing Investigation
The second container, containing 15 micrograms of poison, remains missing. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the suspect's actions and potential accomplices.
