Fatal Attack Outside Heaton Park Synagogue
Two People Killed, Suspected Attacker Shot by Police
The police confirmed on Thursday that two people had been killed in a violent attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, located in the Manchester suburb of Crumpsall. A third man, suspected of being the attacker, was shot by armed police and is believed to have also died. This confirmation is pending due to suspicious objects found on his body, which led to the deployment of a bomb disposal unit.
Three other people were injured in the attack and remain in a critical condition.
Response from Authorities
The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stated in a statement that "additional police resources are being deployed to synagogues across the country".
The police reported being called at 9:31 local time, after a person reported that a car had driven into pedestrians and a man had been stabbed. Police used their firearms at 9:38 and shot the suspected attacker.
Earlier, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, told the BBC that people should avoid the area, while reassuring the public that "the immediate danger appears to have passed".
