Trial of Former Prosecutor Bechir Akremi Begins in Tunis
The Specialized Criminal Chamber for terrorism cases at the Court of First Instance in Tunis began examining the case against former prosecutor Bechir Akremi on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, via video conference.
Background of the Case
The case was brought by the Committee for the Defense of Martyr Chokri Belaïd against Akremi, who is accused of "falsification and use of falsification" in the dossier of Belaïd's assassination.
Proceedings
When given the opportunity to speak from the video conference room at Mornaguia Civil Prison, Akremi requested that the Chamber postpone his trial to a later date so that his lawyer could be present to defend him, as the lawyer is currently abroad for health reasons.
Decision
The Chamber decided to put the case on hold after the hearing to set a later trial date.
Previous Developments
For reference, an investigative judge at the Court of First Instance in Tunis issued a detention warrant against Akremi on February 22, 2024. This warrant followed a complaint filed by the Unified Democratic Patriots Party (El Watad), of which Martyr Chokri Belaïd was the Secretary-General before his assassination, and by the heirs of Martyr Mohamed Brahmi. The complaint concerned judicial acts committed by Akremi in the dossier of Belaïd's assassination.
