Minister of Agriculture Emphasizes Strategic Importance of Aquaculture

The Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, highlighted the strategic importance of aquaculture as a fundamental pillar for strengthening food security. This sector is becoming a necessary alternative in the face of declining natural fish stocks, while also constituting a driver of sustainable development, job creation, and a central axis of the blue economy. A Potential to be Exploited Despite Obstacles During a working session held on Friday at the ministry's headquarters, dedicated to examining the administrative and financial difficulties of the sector, the minister affirmed that aquaculture represents a real opportunity for consolidating Tunisia's position in the blue economy, given its strategic location and maritime potential. According to a statement published on Saturday by the ministry, Mr. Ben Cheikh insisted that the sustainability of this activity depends on the synergy between all stakeholders. He called for finding urgent solutions to current challenges and involving all parties in the implementation of structural reforms to ensure the sustainable development of this vital sector. An in-depth discussion allowed for diagnosing the obstacles to activity and proposing practical solutions to guarantee the stability and profitability of the sector. Emphasis was also placed on the significant losses suffered by marine farms following the exceptional weather conditions of January 19 and 20, 2026. The discussions focused on support mechanisms and emergency solutions to save the affected businesses and ensure the continuity of their operation.
