Douaa Ben Romdhane Launches Petition to Criminalize Animal Torture
Psychologist and human and animal rights activist Douaa Ben Romdhane has announced the launch of a citizen-led initiative calling for the signing of a petition. This move aims to criminalize animal torture and demand that anyone who deliberately harms an animal be held accountable, particularly when such acts are filmed and shared on social media.
The Shock of the Moknine Affair
Speaking on the radio, the psychologist explained that this mobilization follows the recent circulation of a video showing a group of young people slaughtering a dog in Moknine. This act of cruelty sparked a massive wave of outrage and anger among the public and defense organizations.
A Threat to Social Balance
The activist believes that individuals capable of such acts pose a real danger to society and must be held accountable for their actions before the law. She also emphasized the urgency of creating a deterrent legal framework to put an end to the shooting of stray dogs, highlighting the disastrous psychological consequences of these practices on citizens, especially children.
A "Blocked" Bill in Parliament
Douaa Ben Romdhane recalled that a bill related to animal protection was submitted to the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP) in 2024. However, she lamented that the text remains "buried in the drawers" of the agriculture commission, wondering why it is still not considered a legislative priority.
Conclusion
She concluded by stressing that this law aims not only to protect animals but also to protect humans from exposure to scenes of gratuitous and traumatic violence, which seriously affect overall mental health. Read also: Tunisia: a video of animal cruelty shocks the country
