Joint Economic Campaigns: Protecting Citizens' Interests and Combating Illegal Practices

The head of the Ben Arous regional brigade of the municipal police, Commander Makram Manssi, announced on Tuesday the completion of 9,476 joint economic campaigns since the beginning of the year, in coordination with the Ministries of Interior and Trade, as well as the National Institute for Sanitary Security of Food Products.

Objective of the Campaigns

These campaigns, which continue at a sustained pace, aim primarily to raise awareness and protect the interests of citizens, producers, retailers, and traders, while combating illegal practices and breaches of market transparency.

Controls, Seizures, and Prosecutions

The operations are not limited to wholesale markets but extend to weekly markets and retail businesses, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Interior, and security authorities. A new campaign is scheduled to be launched on Tuesday in front of the Ministry of Trade headquarters, following a series of controls carried out last week in several wholesale markets across the country.

Repression of Non-Compliance

According to Manssi, agents take repressive measures in case of non-compliance with the law. He emphasized that the state ensures the availability of consumer products, but speculative practices persist in distribution channels. He cited the recent seizure, at night, of a truck transporting 25 tons of sugar.

Results of the Campaigns

The joint economic campaigns have already resulted in over 20,000 prosecutions for offenses related to competition and prices.

Combating Anarchic Occupation of Public Space

Manssi also described the anarchic occupation of public space as a "scourge," indicating that 80% of wild installations have been eliminated thanks to daily operations. He recalled that "the sidewalk belongs to the citizen" and invited traders to be more civic-minded.

Security Measures for the Upcoming School Year

Finally, with the approach of the new school year, he assured that all security measures are being taken, under the supervision of the Head of State, the Minister of Interior, and the competent authorities, to guarantee the security of educational institutions and their surroundings.
