Algeria Officially Joins the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA)

Algeria officially joined the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA) on Thursday, on the sidelines of the African Global Hydrogen Summit held in Windhoek, Namibia, from September 9 to 11, 2025, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy.

Background and Objectives

This membership is part of the implementation of the national strategy for the development of hydrogen, particularly with regard to strengthening partnerships and international cooperation. According to the same source, it represents a "strong message of unity and continental ambition" in favor of developing renewable energies and green hydrogen in Africa, as well as an "important step" in Algeria's energy transition and economic diversification strategy.

Algeria's Ambitions

Algeria aims to leverage its significant potential in renewable energies to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market. It also intends to strengthen its role in inter-African cooperation, exchange expertise and technologies, participate in training programs, and access new financing and investment opportunities in continental projects.

About the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA)

Created in May 2022, the AGHA is chaired by South African Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. It constitutes a platform led by African governments, bringing together countries committed to accelerating large-scale projects related to renewable energies and green hydrogen.

Strategic Objectives of the AGHA

The alliance has set six strategic objectives:

  1. Affirm Continental Leadership: Position Africa as a leader in the green hydrogen sector.
  2. Support Legal and Regulatory Frameworks: Develop and support legal and regulatory frameworks that facilitate the development of green hydrogen projects.
  3. Accelerate Market Development: Accelerate the development of green hydrogen markets in Africa.
  4. Promote Green Financing and Local Supply Chains: Promote green financing and the development of local supply chains for green hydrogen projects.
  5. Encourage Technology Sharing: Encourage the sharing of technologies and expertise among member countries.
  6. Establish International Partnerships: Establish partnerships with international organizations and countries to access financing and expertise.

This membership marks a significant step forward for Algeria in its pursuit of becoming a key player in the global green hydrogen market, while also contributing to the development of renewable energies and economic diversification in Africa.
