Direct Air Link Between Tunisia and Iraq to Resume on May 21
A significant development in the bilateral relations and tourism between Tunisia and Iraq, the direct air link between the two countries is set to resume on May 21. This decision will greatly benefit the Tunisian community residing in Iraq, as well as the development of economic and tourism ties between the two nations.
According to Tunisian Ambassador to Baghdad, Chokri Latif, the resumption of the direct air link is a significant event. He recalled that the line was suspended due to regional circumstances, but was reactivated through coordination between the relevant authorities and the Iraqi airline.
A weekly flight will operate every Thursday, departing from Baghdad International Airport and arriving at Tunis-Carthage Airport. The estimated flight duration is approximately four and a half hours, reducing the constraints associated with layovers and connections.
The resumption of this direct air link coincides with the summer return of the Tunisian diaspora and the start of the tourist season. It also aligns with the growing interest of Iraqi tourists in visiting Tunisia, facilitated by the new access conditions granted to Iraqi visitors under certain circumstances.
Ambassador Latif highlighted positive indicators for the upcoming tourist season, emphasizing the increased commitment of Iraqi travel agencies to promote Tunisia as a destination.
From an economic perspective, this direct air link is expected to contribute to a decrease in airfare costs compared to flights with layovers, offering a significant advantage to Tunisian families residing in Iraq.
The Tunisian diplomatic representation in Baghdad has reaffirmed its availability to support members of the Tunisian community, particularly in terms of information and booking. The possibility of expanding this air service to other Iraqi cities, such as Erbil and Basra, in the future was also mentioned.
