Tunis Court of Appeal Postpones Ahmed Souab's Trial

The Criminal Chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal announced on Thursday the postponement of the case involving lawyer and former administrative judge Ahmed Souab. Following a request from the defense collective, the hearing has been rescheduled for February 23. According to a judicial source cited by the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency, the court also rejected the request for the accused's release.

Background of the Case

This case follows a first verdict delivered on October 31, 2025, by the specialized criminal chamber for terrorism cases. The Tunis Court of First Instance had sentenced Ahmed Souab to a total of five years in prison, accompanied by three years of administrative surveillance. The sentence breaks down into four years of imprisonment for deliberately disclosing data that could endanger protected persons, and one year for threatening a terrorist crime.

Origin of the Case

The case dates back to April 21, 2025, when the former magistrate was arrested. He was detained after making public statements in front of the Tunis Bar Association, on the sidelines of a hearing related to the so-called "plot against state security" case. A video of his intervention, filmed two days earlier, had led the investigating judge of the Judicial Pole for the fight against terrorism to order his detention on various charges.

Charges Against Ahmed Souab

According to the clarifications provided by the prosecution at the time, the investigation targets several serious offenses. Ahmed Souab is being prosecuted for threatening to commit terrorist acts with the aim of forcing a person to act or refrain from doing so, as well as for deliberately endangering the life of others and making threats punishable by criminal penalties.
