Agriculture in Tunisia: A Pillar of the Economy and a Key Driver of Social Development, Food Security, and Innovation
Agriculture remains one of the fundamental pillars of Tunisia's economy and a key driver of social development, food security, and innovation in the country. The new jobs in agriculture embody a revolution at the heart of rural areas. Long associated with traditional practices, agriculture is now undergoing a progressive transformation, driven by agricultural digitalization, connected agriculture, and innovation.
The Rise of Connected Agriculture
Connected agriculture is emerging as a key pillar of the modern agricultural world. This digitalization is profoundly transforming the skills required and creating new roles related to data management, technological maintenance, and more. In the face of climate challenges, the ecological transition is pushing sector actors to adopt responsible practices. Sustainable agriculture is no longer an option, but a necessity that is both economically, socially, and environmentally essential. New jobs are emerging, centered on the preservation of ecosystems, energy optimization, and the sustainable management of farms. These functions require a greater mastery of agricultural skills and a fine understanding of environmental issues.
A Favorable Ecosystem for Young People
Today, professionals in the sector are focusing their development efforts on modernizing professional structures and creating a favorable ecosystem for young people, with a particular focus on mobilization, valorization, and the takeover of agricultural land by young people, support for entrepreneurial innovation in agricultural sectors, and the improvement of training and the professional environment.
The Agridays Campaign
In this context, and on the occasion of National Agriculture Day celebrated on May 12, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries has highlighted, as part of the "Agridays" campaign, carried out in collaboration with the Agricultural Extension and Training Agency (Avfa), the specifics of a Tunisian agriculture in full transformation, more innovative, more technological, and focused on future jobs. The ministry has unveiled, as part of this campaign, a new exterior mural on Alain Savary Avenue in Tunis, featuring artistic frescoes and visual panels that value the sectors of the agricultural and maritime industries: agro-food industries, aquaculture, naval mechanics, intelligent agriculture, food product transformation, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Future Sectors
This demonstration also highlights the jobs that are recruiting and the skills sought in agricultural, agro-food, and maritime sectors. An important place is given to agricultural and maritime vocational training through visualizations of Avfa training centers, learner pathways, and opportunities offered to young people in different regions of the country. The campaign also values a new generation of young people who are choosing agriculture, agro-food, and fishing as future sectors.
Agridays: A Campaign to Raise Awareness
Through several visuals and testimonials, Agridays illustrates the paths of young people who have evolved in these jobs thanks to training, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Placed under the slogan "Food security is a decision, not a choice," the Agridays campaign aims to raise public awareness of the issues of food security, innovation, employment, and climate adaptation.
Immersive Training Activities
In parallel, several Avfa vocational training centers are offering immersive activities directly linked to the professional world. For example, in the Ben Arous governorate, learners discovered the jobs of agro-food transformation within companies. In Kélibia (Nabeul governorate), meetings brought together maritime sector companies and young people to identify the needs of the employment market. In Chott Mariem (Sousse governorate), a startup specializing in intelligent agriculture presented technological solutions applied to the agricultural sector. This campaign highlights the efforts made by Avfa to modernize its vocational training centers and improve its services in favor of young people. These efforts are part of strategic partnerships, including the Trace program and the Nexus Skills & Jobs for Youth project, which accompany Avfa in its mission to strengthen the economic inclusion of women and young people in the agriculture and fishing sectors.
