New Seed Varieties Developed to Combat Climate Change

According to Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, head of the General Directorate of Agricultural Production at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, new seed varieties are being developed every year to adapt to climate change. Invited to the "Youm Saïd" show on National Radio on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Ben Romdhane emphasized that years of drought in Tunisia have affected and reduced water resources. He added that Tunisia has a comprehensive strategy to valorize rainwater, in addition to turning to seawater desalination on various coasts and experimenting with cloud seeding. He stressed the need to act to reduce the intensity of climate change and adapt to it, noting that Tunisia has managed to overcome difficulties after the years of drought it has faced.

Applications to Limit Water Waste

In addition to developing new seed varieties, Ben Romdhane specified that applications have been put in place to reduce water waste. He explained that the irrigation application, created by the National Institute of Large Crops, helps farmers save water by providing their crops with the exact amount of water needed, without wasting any. The official concluded that these applications contribute to reducing production costs and improving the productivity of agricultural farms.
