Australian Prime Minister Vows to Combat Hate and Extremism
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged on Thursday to launch a comprehensive campaign against "hate, division, and extremism" following the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney. He promised to target "radical preachers and individuals spreading hate," including the potential cancellation of their visas.
During a press conference, Mr. Albanese stated that he and the Australian people were "shocked and angry" and that they must redouble their efforts to combat what he described as a "malevolent plague." He announced that new laws related to "aggravated hate speech" would allow for the punishment of preachers and leaders who incite hate and violence.
Australia also plans to establish a classification system for organizations led by individuals who spread hate speech. The Prime Minister specified that the government would strengthen the powers of the Minister of the Interior to cancel or deny visas to individuals who promote "hate and division" speech.
