"Ghar El Melh Fortifications" Inscribed on the Final Heritage List of the Islamic World by ICESCO
The decision to inscribe the "Ghar El Melh Fortifications" on the final heritage list of the Islamic World by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) was made during the 13th meeting of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World, held from February 10 to 12, 2026, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The recognition of these fortifications, consisting of three 17th-century forts, is considered international protection that will strengthen restoration and maintenance efforts according to global standards. This operation provides international visibility, placing the city of Ghar El Melh on the map of global cultural and spiritual tourism, while constituting a national achievement that strengthens Tunisian identity in all its authenticity.
Sidi Bou Saïd's Inscription on ICESCO's Final List Confirmed
The inscription dossier of Sidi Bou Saïd received special attention from the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World. Its inscription on ICESCO's final list, which was confirmed in 2022, was reaffirmed with a special mention and a recommendation to submit the dossier to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to support its inscription process on the World Heritage List.
ICESCO Director Highlights Sidi Bou Saïd's Unique Characteristics
The Director of Culture at ICESCO emphasized that Sidi Bou Saïd stands out for its unique natural and cultural site, as well as its distinctive architectural character. Its tourist and artisanal appeal, rooted in the region's history, makes it worthy of increased protection and enhancement at the international level. The official highlighted the Mediterranean artistic and museum value of the Sidi Boussaid site, particularly with the presence of the Ennejma Ezzahra Palace (Palace of Baron d'Erlanger), which houses the Center for Arab and Mediterranean Music (CMAM).
ICESCO's Commitment to Supporting Member States
Finally, the Director reaffirmed ICESCO's commitment to supporting and accompanying member states in their efforts to inscribe their sites on its final lists, as well as on UNESCO's lists for tangible and intangible heritage, recalling the official inscription of the island of Djerba on UNESCO's World Heritage List on September 18, 2023.
