Tunisia Secures Key Positions in Pan-African Parliament and Supports North African President-Elect

Tunisia Makes Significant Gains in Pan-African Parliament

Tunisia has secured three crucial positions within the Pan-African Parliament and provided decisive support to the election of a North African as its president, following the extraordinary session held in Midrand, South Africa from April 26 to May 4, 2026.

The delegation of the Assembly of the People's Representatives (ARP) won the presidency of the North Africa Group, awarded to Deputy Yosri Baouab, the position of rapporteur for the Commission on Women, Family, Youth, and People with Special Needs, given to Deputy Lotfi Hammami, as well as the vice-presidency of the Network of Women Parliamentarians, held by Deputy Awatef Cheniti.

The session was also marked by a historic event: the accession of a representative from North Africa to the presidency of the Pan-African Parliament for the first time since its creation in 2004. Algerian Fateh Boutbig was elected with nearly two-thirds of the votes, after benefiting from the active support of the Tunisian delegation within the regional group.

The ARP also commended the role of Deputy Aymen Ben Salah in the consultations and his contribution to maintaining the cohesion of the Tunisian group throughout the proceedings.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the Assembly stated that these results demonstrate the growing place of Tunisian parliamentary diplomacy and its ability to positively influence its regional and continental environment.
