Violence Against Women: Alarming Statistics Revealed
On Thursday, December 4, 2025, a workshop on raising awareness about the risks of violence against women was held in Kairouan, where a study conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) was presented. The study revealed that 87% of women surveyed had been victims of violence at least once in their lives.
Mariem Ouled Chaïeb, a communication expert for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), indicated that another study conducted by the Fund in 2023, focusing on digital violence and technology-facilitated violence, showed that 60% of women surveyed had been victims of cyber violence. She clarified that digital violence is not limited to social networks, but also includes short messages (SMS) and phone calls.
In the same context, she emphasized that the UNFPA is working with various partners to define and raise awareness about the forms of violence, as many victims experience digital violence without being aware of it. She stressed the need to strengthen the capacities of concerned actors to care for women victims of violence and raise awareness.
