Algeria Officially Launches 5G Mobile Network
The 5G mobile network was officially launched in Algeria on Wednesday, December 3, paving the way for a gradual deployment across the entire national territory. The launch was announced by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, during a ceremony held at the International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers, in the presence of representatives from the three main operators selected to operate the 5G network: Mobilis, Djezzy, and Ooredoo Algeria. These operators had obtained their 5G licenses during the official allocation on July 3, 2025. The launch constitutes, according to the ministry, "a decisive step in the modernization of telecommunications," and marks the beginning of a deployment that will take place over time, prioritizing certain wilayas before achieving national coverage.
Tunisia and Morocco Join the 5G Race
On a regional level, Tunisia has already deployed 5G. In fact, the national operator Tunisie Telecom, in partnership with Ericsson, launched its commercial 5G services on February 14, 2025, with offers for mobile subscribers as well as fixed wireless access (Fixed Wireless Access) for households. Thanks to this deployment, Tunisia has positioned itself as one of the pioneers of 5G in North Africa. For its part, Morocco officially activated 5G on November 7, 2025, when the country's three main operators (IAM, Orange Morocco, and inwi) began offering the service in several cities of the Kingdom. The deployment schedule planned under the "Digital Morocco 2030" national plan envisages a progressive extension of 5G to the entire country by 2030.
North Africa: A Race Towards Digital Modernization
With these announcements, North Africa is positioning itself as one of the pioneering regions on the continent in terms of 5G telecommunications. Tunisia took the lead at the beginning of 2025; Algeria followed with an official launch in December 2025, and Morocco completed its activation in November 2025. This dynamic illustrates a common desire to accelerate digital transformation, modernize telecommunications infrastructure, and provide high-speed access to urban and rural populations.
Expected Benefits of 5G Deployment
This surge in 5G is expected to promote the development of high-value-added applications in sectors such as Industry 4.0, connected health, digital education, smart agriculture, public services, as well as entertainment, telecommuting, or streaming. In each country, the deployment of 5G remains gradual: for Algeria, operators have been authorized to set up the first stations, but coverage will need to be extended progressively to less populated wilayas. For Morocco, the goal is to cover 45% of the population by the end of 2026 and 85% by 2030. The availability of compatible terminals, optimization of frequencies, stabilization of commercial offers, and user awareness will be crucial factors in the success of this transition.
