Electricity Production Reaches 14,000 GWh in August 2025

Electricity production reached approximately 14,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by the end of August 2025, representing a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, local consumption production saw a 4% increase during the same period.

Energy Production Dependencies

During this period, the electricity production park relied almost entirely on natural gas to generate electricity, with its contribution estimated at around 94%.

Significant Increase in Electricity Imports

Notably, there was a significant increase in electricity imports, particularly from Algeria, which covered 11% of the national electricity needs.

National Oil Production

According to data from the National Observatory of Energy and Mines (ONEM), national crude oil production reached approximately 0.86 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtep) by the end of August 2025, representing a 9% decrease compared to the end of August 2024, when it stood at 0.94 Mtep.

Liquid Gas Production

The production of liquid gas (including production from the Gabès plant) was estimated at around 86,000 tons of oil equivalent by the end of August 2025, recording a 10% decrease.

Commercial Dry Gas Production

Commercial dry gas production also decreased by 6% by the end of August 2025, standing at approximately 0.78 Mtep, compared to 0.82 Mtep during the same period in the previous year.

Reasons for Decrease

The National Energy Observatory attributes this decrease mainly to the continuous decline in production from major fields and the lack of new drilling and discovery projects.

Royalties and Gas Purchases

Total royalty quantities also decreased by 11%, reaching 587,000 tons of oil equivalent, while purchases of Algerian gas increased by 19% by the end of August 2025, standing at approximately 1,923,000 tons.
