Alzheimer's Disease in Tunisia: A Growing Concern

The head of the neurology department at the National Mongi Ben Hamida Institute, Samia Ben Sassi, stated on Saturday, September 20, 2025, that 3% of Tunisians over 65 years old are affected by Alzheimer's disease. She also estimated that 45,000 cases could be recorded by the end of 2030.

During a scientific event held at the Tunis Science City, she explained to National Radio that the disease is caused by atrophy of brain cells and accumulation of proteins. These factors are mainly related to aging and genetic predispositions.

She added that other factors can be controlled to reduce the risks, such as:

  • Preventing diabetes and hypertension
  • Adopting a Mediterranean diet
  • Engaging in regular physical and mental activities

These measures can help mitigate the risks associated with Alzheimer's disease, which is becoming an increasingly significant concern in Tunisia.
