Minister of Transport Announces Major Airport Expansion Project

The Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, announced on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, during a session at the Assembly of People's Representatives, that the expansion project of Tunis-Carthage International Airport is estimated to cost 3 billion dinars. This strategic expansion, which has significant economic and social implications, will enable the airport to accommodate up to 18 million passengers per year. The project also includes the creation of a suspended metro line connecting the airport to the capital, aiming to streamline access for travelers.

Key Project Details

  • The project will be implemented using the "turnkey" formula, preceded by a pre-selection process, based on a study conducted by the Civil Aviation and Airports Office.
  • The option to build a new airport in Bizerte is also being considered.

Update on Tunisair

The Minister also provided an update on the situation of Tunisair, the national airline. Currently, the company operates 14 aircraft, supplemented by three leased planes, and incurs monthly losses of approximately 22 million dinars. To address this, Tunisair plans to:

  • Lease-purchase five additional aircraft
  • Repair two planes to achieve financial balance with 21 operational aircraft
  • Finalize a restructuring plan by the end of the year

Restructuring Plans for Transport Companies

Minister Amri further indicated that restructuring programs will be implemented for:

  • The Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT)
  • The Tunisian Navigation Company (CTN)
  • The Tunisian Handling and Stevedoring Company (STAM) These efforts aim to enhance the efficiency and performance of public transport companies.
