Road Accidents: A Decrease in Injuries but an Increase in Fatalities
The number of people injured in road accidents has reached 4,883 from the beginning of the year until September 19, 2025. This represents a decrease of nearly 16% compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published by the National Road Safety Observatory.
However, the number of road fatalities has increased, rising from 808 last year to 876 for the same period in 2025. The total number of accidents has decreased, with 3,638 accidents recorded compared to 4,243 in 2024, representing a reduction of 605 accidents.
Main Causes of Accidents, Fatalities, and Injuries
The Observatory's data reveals that the primary causes of accidents, fatalities, and injuries are:
- Distraction and lack of attention: responsible for 40.54% of accidents, 29.34% of fatalities, and 35.70% of injuries.
- Excessive speed: the cause of over 15% of accidents, nearly 27% of fatalities, and approximately 18% of injuries.
- Failure to yield: in third position, followed by changes in direction, crossing the road, and failure to comply with the highway code.
Geographic Distribution
In terms of geographic distribution, the governorate of Tunis leads in the number of accidents (489) and injuries (579). However, it is the governorate of Sfax that has the highest number of fatalities with 92 deaths, followed by Tunis (82 deaths), Sidi Bouzid (72 deaths), and Nabeul (60 deaths).
