Major Police Operation Targets Illegal Food Distribution and Speculation
A significant operation by the national police, carried out on Sunday, February 15, 2026, has struck a blow to illegal distribution circuits and combated speculation on food products across several governorates in the country.
Under the supervision of security officials on the ground, interventions targeted clandestine cold storage facilities, non-compliant slaughterhouses, as well as wholesale and retail markets. These actions resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of food products and the establishment of several economic and judicial records.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security, 63 records were established, 16 health offenses were identified, and 13 individuals were presented to the justice system for legal action to be taken against them. The seizures included:
- Over 1.1 tons of apples
- 1.7 tons of dates
- 6.5 tons of onions
- 5 tons of red squash
- Several hundred kilograms of potatoes, bananas, leafy vegetables, and seafood
Some of the merchandise was being sold at excessive prices, distributed through unofficial channels, or was even unfit for consumption.
The General Directorate of National Security emphasized that this fight against monopoly and speculation is not a one-time effort, but rather part of a long-term state strategy aimed at ensuring regular market supply and regulating prices to protect citizens' purchasing power.
